Cameroon is home to at least 542 different species of fish, as well as over 15,000 species of butterflies, 280 mammals, 165 of the 275 reptiles that exist in Africa, 3 species of crocodiles, and 190 to 200 frog amphibians.
In addition, there are at least 900 different bird species, of which about 750 are native to Cameroon.
In 2008, Takamanda National Park was established along the border with Nigeria to protect the endangered Cross River Gorillas. Hunting and deforestation had led to a decline in the population to less than 300 animals worldwide. Another protected area is the Banyang Mbo Nature Reserve where the forest elephant lives.
