Chad includes the eastern part of the Chad Basin with most of Lake Chad. The basin (including the lake) occupies 90% of the land area.
A total of ~4,500 plant species and ~720 animal species have been documented in Chad. Of these, 71 plant, 4 mammal, 1 reptile, 1 bird, and 16 fish species are endemic and known only from Chad. Three species of turtles found in Chad are on the endangered species list. The mammalian fauna of Chad is very rich and almost all flagship tourist animal species occur. So among others lions, cheetahs, giraffes. The population of the African elephant in Chad is estimated at about 3,000 individuals.
