The largest part of Rwanda is occupied by a high plateau around 1500m above sea level in the East African interlake region. The deeply dissected highland plateau, interspersed with lakes without drainage, slopes eastward to the marshy depression of the Kagera River. This is where the border with Tanzania runs. I
The flora of Rwanda is tropical. The central highlands are covered with wet savannah, the west up to 2500m a.s.l. with tropical rainforest and wet savannah. Above, bamboo and coso tree forests are found; the highest elevations bear alpine vegetation with herbs and mosses. In the drier east, dry savannahs predominate, and in the floodplain of the Kagera, marsh grasslands and extensive areas of floating papyrus plant carpets. The extreme east is occupied by the 2590 km² Kagera National Park.
