The Sultanate of Brunei is a state in Asia. It is located on the island of Borneo (Indonesian Kalimantan) in the South China Sea and borders Malaysia.

The present territory of Brunei represents the remnant of a much larger sultanate in historical times, which between the 16th and 19th centuries assigned roughly the entire northern coast to the domain of the Sultan of Brunei.
