The main part of the country is occupied by an extensive highland that descends like a staircase from 1800m in the west to 1200m in the east; a steep rocky slope with upstream marshes forms the end of each stage. In the west, the plateaus merge into a mountain range rising up to 2670 m, which drops steeply to the Central African Rift Valley and forms the watershed between the Congo and the Nile.
